(Official CBDT Circular No. 07/2025 dated June 25, 2025)
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced important news for taxpayers who faced issues with their delayed Income Tax Returns (ITRs).
The Problem:
Many ITRs, though filed late with official permission under Section 119(2)(b), weren't processed on time due to technical reasons. This left taxpayers waiting.
The Solution:
The CBDT has stepped in to fix this.
Who Benefits?
relief applies to you if:
- You filed your ITR electronically on or before March 31, 2024.
- Your late filing was officially approved under Section 119(2)(b).
- Your return is still awaiting processing.
New Processing Deadline:
The Income Tax Department will now process these specific returns and send you the necessary notifications by March 31, 2026.
What's NOT Covered?
This relaxation won't apply if:
- Your tax assessment for that year is already complete.
- Your only pending issue is a refund, but your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar. In this case, the refund won't be processed.
In Short:
This is good news for those who correctly filed their delayed ITRs but were stuck due to processing delays. The CBDT's circular, dated June 25, 2025, aims to clear this backlog and provide clarity.
