New CBDT Rules Simplify ITR Corrections and Speed Up Tax Refunds
The CBDT has empowered the CPC Bengaluru with concurrent jurisdiction under Section 154 to rectify obvious errors in ITRs like missed TDS/TCS credits, relief miscalculations, and interest under Section 244A—leading to faster refunds, reduced compliance burden, and greater transparency. Effective from October 27, 2025 (Notification No. 155/2025), this centralized approach streamlines rectifications and allows demand notices under Section 156 where needed.
Great news for Indian taxpayers! The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has rolled out new rules that make correcting Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and receiving refunds faster and simpler. This reform is a major step toward modernizing India’s tax administration and reducing hassles for taxpayers.
At the heart of this change is the Central Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru, which now has expanded powers to handle rectification cases. This means fewer delays, less paperwork, and quicker results for you.
The Big Change: Empowering the CPC
Earlier, rectification of errors in tax filings was mostly handled by local Assessing Officers (AOs). Now, the Commissioner of Income Tax (CPC), Bengaluru has been given concurrent jurisdiction under Section 154 of the Income Tax Act to fix “obvious errors” in tax computation, credits, and refunds.
What the CPC Can Rectify
- Non-consideration of prepaid tax credits (like TDS/TCS).
- Incorrect calculation of reliefs.
- Errors in interest computation under Section 244A (interest on refunds).
- Issuing demand notices under Section 156 if rectification leads to additional tax liability.
This concurrent authority ensures smoother processing and eliminates bottlenecks.
Benefits for Taxpayers
- Faster refunds: Errors can be fixed quickly, ensuring refunds aren’t delayed.
- Reduced compliance burden: A centralized, automated mechanism means less back-and-forth with tax offices.
- Improved transparency: Automated rectifications create a clear audit trail, ensuring accuracy in credits and reliefs.
Who Holds the Power?
- Commissioner of Income Tax (CPC): Primary authority for centralized rectifications.
- Delegation of power: The Commissioner can delegate to Additional or Joint Commissioners at CPC.
- Assessing Officers (AOs): Retain authority and now share jurisdiction with CPC for specific cases.
Effective Date
The new rules came into force on October 27, 2025 (Notification No. 155/2025). From this date, the CPC has been officially empowered to act on rectification cases, reinforcing the government’s push for a faster, tech-driven tax process.
Section 154: The Legal Backbone
Section 154 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 allows tax authorities to correct “mistakes apparent from the record.” These are simple, obvious errors that don’t require detailed investigation.
Examples
- Clerical or arithmetic mistakes.
- Ignoring reported prepaid tax credits.
- Incorrect interest calculation under Section 244A.
Rectification orders under this section must generally be passed within four years from the end of the financial year in which the original order was issued.
Takeaway
The CBDT’s latest notification is a win for taxpayers. By shifting rectification powers to the CPC, the government is delivering on its promise of a simpler, faster, and more transparent tax system.
