Taxpayers, Good News! Your Income Tax Return Troubles Just Got Easier!
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced significant relief for taxpayers. A new circular extends deadlines for correcting income tax returns that were incorrectly invalidated by CPC-Bengaluru for Assessment Year 2023-24 and also provides an extended period to rectify returns where income was mistakenly excluded from assessment. This move aims to simplify compliance and ensure accurate tax records for citizens.

We have some important news from the government that will make life a bit easier for many of you who have filed your income tax returns.
Filing taxes can sometimes be complicated, and small mistakes can lead to big problems. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has released a new circular (Circular No. 10/2025) that provides some much-needed relief!
Here’s the simple breakdown:
1. Relief for Returns Incorrectly Invalidated by CPC-Bengaluru
If you filed your income tax return online, but it was incorrectly marked as invalid by the CPC-Bengaluru (the unit that processes income tax returns), you now have more time to fix it!
- What happened? Many taxpayers encountered problems where their valid returns were marked invalid due to technical glitches or other reasons.
- What’s the fix? The CBDT has extended the deadline for processing these returns. You now have until December 31, 2024, to get these returns validated. This specifically applies to returns for the Assessment Year 2023-24. So, if your return was affected, take a deep breath—you have time to sort it out!
2. Good News for Returns Where Income Was Missed
There’s more good news if you filed your income tax return electronically, but some of your income was mistakenly left out of the assessment by March 31, 2024.
- What happened? Sometimes, even after you filed your return, certain parts of your income might have been accidentally missed or excluded from your final tax assessment.
- What’s the fix? The tax board has also extended the time for these cases. If your return falls into this category and some income was wrongly excluded, you can now correct it to ensure the proper assessment is done. The department will send you a notice for assessment by March 31, 2026. This is under Section 143(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
3. What About Refunds and Other Small Issues?
The circular also clarifies that if you have any pending refunds or other minor issues related to your tax assessment (like if your Aadhaar isn't linked correctly, or there’s a small difference in the tax amount – for example, a few hundred ₹), don’t worry. The existing tax laws still apply, and your cases will be handled according to the established rules.
In simple words, the government is giving taxpayers more time and flexibility to correct past mistakes and ensure that their tax records are accurate.
This is a positive step that shows the tax department is listening to the challenges faced by taxpayers. If you find yourself in any of these situations, make sure to take advantage of this extended time to get your tax matters in order.
P.S. If you're unsure about your specific situation, it's always a good idea to consult a tax advisor!
