UIDAI Deactivates 2 Crore Aadhaar Numbers in Major Clean-Up
UIDAI has taken a big step to protect India’s identity system by deactivating over 2 crore Aadhaar numbers. Most of these numbers belonged to people who have passed away. The purpose is to prevent fraud and keep the Aadhaar system accurate and safe.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers as part of a large clean-up process. This may sound worrying, but this step is meant to keep India’s identity system safe and accurate.
Why Were These Aadhaar Numbers Removed?
The main reason was to prevent misuse. Most of the deactivated Aadhaar numbers belonged to people who are no longer alive.
- Stops Fraud: This prevents anyone from using a deceased person’s Aadhaar for welfare benefits, subsidies, banking or pension claims.
- Better Records: Removing inactive numbers keeps the Aadhaar database clean and trusted.
- No Reuse: Aadhaar numbers are never reassigned or given to another person.
How UIDAI Identified These Numbers
This was not random. UIDAI used verified data from:
- Registrar General of India (RGI)
- State and Union Territory records
- Public Distribution System (PDS)
- National Social Assistance Program
UIDAI is also working with banks and other institutions to improve future verification.
How Families Can Report a Death
UIDAI now allows a family member to report a death online:
- Go to the myAadhaar portal.
- Use the feature: Reporting of Death of a Family Member.
- Enter the Aadhaar number and the official death registration number.
UIDAI will verify details before deactivation.
How to Check if Your Aadhaar Is Active
If you haven’t used your Aadhaar recently, checking its status is a good idea.
- Visit: uidai.gov.in.
- Select Verify Aadhaar Number or Check Aadhaar Validity.
- Enter your Aadhaar and the verification code.
The system will confirm whether your Aadhaar is valid and active.
Final Note
This clean-up step is a strong move toward a safer and more trusted identity system for India. The goal is to protect benefits, stop misuse, and maintain a reliable national database.
