Major GST Filing Updates Coming in October 2025 What Businesses Must Prepare For

Starting October 2025, the GST system will undergo major changes affecting how businesses file returns and claim input tax credit. Key updates include manual ITC acceptance, locked GSTR-3B liabilities, new credit note rules, and invoice-level TDS reporting. Businesses must adapt to stay compliant and avoid filing issues.

The GST system is getting some major updates starting October 2025. These changes will affect how you file returns and claim input tax credit. Let's break down what's changing and what it means for your business.

What's Changing?

No More Auto-Population of Input Tax Credit

Your input tax credit won't automatically show up in GSTR-2B anymore. You'll need to go into the Invoice Management System and manually accept or reject each invoice. Only the invoices you accept will count for ITC in GSTR-3B. It's an extra step, but it gives you more control over what you're claiming.

You Can't Edit Tax Liability in GSTR-3B

The tax liability numbers that show up in GSTR-3B are now locked. You can't change them directly. If you made a mistake, you'll have to fix it by filing corrections in GSTR-1 or GSTR-1A. Double-check your GSTR-1 before you file it to avoid extra work later.

New Rules for Credit Notes

If a supplier issues a credit note, they can't reduce their tax liability right away. First, you (the buyer) need to reverse the related ITC in your return. Only after you do that can the supplier reduce their tax liability. This ensures both sides are aligned.

More Details Needed in GSTR-7

If you're filing GSTR-7 for TDS, you'll now need to provide invoice-level details. Instead of just total amounts, you'll need to break down the information for each invoice. This helps match records between the deductor and the supplier.

A Few More Things to Know

  • Returns older than three years will be blocked from filing.
  • The Invoice Management System now lets you mark invoices as "pending" for a month, add notes, and specify exact amounts when reducing ITC.

What Should You Do?

  • Check your invoices regularly and reconcile them.
  • Ensure your GSTR-1 is accurate before submission.
  • Train your team on the new IMS features and ITC process.
  • Coordinate with suppliers about credit notes to avoid confusion.

The Bottom Line

These changes might feel like more work at first, but they're designed to make the GST system clearer and reduce mismatches. The sooner you adapt, the smoother your GST filing will be. Take time now to understand these updates and avoid future headaches.
